The 36 Guna Trap
Every astrology website offers the same thing: enter two birth details, get a score out of 36, and a verdict. Score above 18? “Good match.” Below 18? “Not recommended.”
This is dangerously oversimplified. Two charts can score 30/36 on Ashtakoot and still have a Nadi Dosha that BPHS explicitly warns against. Two charts can score 15/36 and have perfect Navamsha compatibility that the guna system doesn’t even check.
What Ashtakoot Actually Measures
The eight koots (Varna, Vashya, Tara, Yoni, Graha Maitri, Gana, Bhakoot, Nadi) test specific dimensions of compatibility based on the Moon nakshatra of both partners. Each koot gets a score, and the total determines the match quality.
This system is ancient and useful — but it was designed as a screening tool, not a final verdict. BPHS uses it alongside several other checks that most websites skip entirely.
The Five Checks Most Websites Skip
1. Mangal Dosha Cross-Match
If one partner has Mangal Dosha and the other doesn’t, the severity must be evaluated from three reference points (Ascendant, Moon, Venus) for BOTH charts, with all cancellation conditions applied. A simple “both are Manglik so it’s fine” or “one is Manglik so reject” is incorrect.
2. Navamsha (D9) Cross-Analysis
The D9 chart is the marriage chart. The 7th house in each partner’s Navamsha must be compatible. If Partner A’s D9 shows “controlling spouse” and Partner B’s D9 shows “independent nature,” that’s a structural friction point no guna score will reveal.
3. Bhakoot Exception Handling
Bhakoot Dosha (2/12 or 6/8 Moon sign relationship) costs 7 points in Ashtakoot. But classical texts provide specific exceptions: if the lords of both Moon signs are friends, or if one lord is exalted, the dosha is cancelled. Most calculators don’t apply these exceptions.
4. Seventh Lord Compatibility
The 7th house lord in each chart represents what each person needs from a partner. If Partner A’s 7th lord is Saturn (needs stability and commitment) and Partner B’s 7th lord is Mars (needs independence and excitement), that’s a compatibility dimension the guna system doesn’t measure.
5. Dasha Timing Alignment
Even a perfect match can struggle if they marry during a difficult dasha period for either partner. The timing of marriage relative to each person’s Vimshottari dasha affects the first few years of married life — which sets the tone for the entire relationship.
